Your Grand Arrival

As you make your way toward Knob N' Wood, you'll pass the mural mailbox, cross the bridge, move through native plantings and pollinator gardens, and arrive at the stained-glass entrance.

The covered porch gives us another gathering space just outside the main room, with space for shared meals, workshop tables, conversation, or simply sitting and looking out into the woodland.

Food is not an afterthought with retreats at Wild Indigo.

To us, food is one of the world's great universal love languages. People can come to a table from different religions, countries, cultures, families, generations, and backgrounds. Sometimes we do not even share a spoken language, and still everybody understands the invitation: pull up a chair, try this, pass that bowl.

There is something almost alchemical about cooking side by side and then sitting down to eat what everyone's hands helped make. Strangers become names. Names become stories. Recipes become memories.

Sharing food does more than feed us. It gives us a way to meet one another, listen to one another, learn where someone comes from, and build real relationships.

The fully equipped artisan-built kitchen stays connected to the dining room and wider gathering space, so the person teaching is never tucked away from everyone else. This room was made for the whole beautiful process: making, tasting, teaching, sharing, talking, laughing, and gathering around what we created together.

CENTRAL LIVING ROOM

Living Room + Masonry Heater

The central living room is home to the wood-fired masonry heater.

The open floor can remain furnished for conversation, dining, and intimate gatherings or shift for yoga mats, workshops, sound baths, meditation, movement, and ceremony.

Library Bar

Walls of windows keep the forest close while the interior remains warm, flexible, and deeply handmade.

Live-edge beams, books, art, hand-built details, and the view toward Loki's Daffodil Renewal Labyrinth when it is in bloom make the room feel connected to the land around it.

ROOM TO SPREAD OUT

Yoga Loft + Flexible Workshop Space

The Yoga Loft adds another layer of possibility above the main floor: a place for smaller practices, quiet reflection, breakouts, or additional mat space when a group needs more than one zone.

The loft is an elevated, open upper-level space and is best for guests who are comfortable accessing it. The main floor remains the primary retreat space for guests who need a more accessible route.

Bathrooms, Mobility + Belonging

Knob N' Wood includes two mobility-friendly bathrooms with safety bars and roll-under sinks. The kitchen also includes an accessible work area, and our main retreat parking area is reserved with mobility needs in mind.

Because Wild Indigo is a natural woodland property with varied terrain, we will always be transparent about what is and is not accessible for a particular gathering. Before your gathering, we can talk through dietary needs, allergies, mobility considerations, sensory needs, parking, pathways, seating, and other reasonable accommodations so we can identify the most supportive route through the spaces and experiences your group plans to use.

AN EARTH BUILD

Built From the Land, For the Land

Ship Prisms. Glass ship prisms are built directly into the kitchen. Historically used to carry daylight into the darker decks of ships, they now bring sunlight deeper into Knob N' Wood as part of the building's passive-solar lighting and daylighting design.

• Built Kindly Toward the EarthKnob N' Wood began with the intention of building as kindly toward the Earth as we could, from the materials and building methods to the carbon footprint and the decision to use what this land already offered.
• The Tulip Poplar StoryMuch of the wood used throughout the building came directly from this property. A tulip poplar the original seller planted with her sister when they were children was later struck by lightning, milled, and given another life throughout the ceilings and closet doors. The tree never really left the property; it changed form.
• Natural BuildingCob, strawbale walls, timber framing, reclaimed and locally meaningful materials, passive-solar design, natural light, and the wood-fired masonry heater are all part of the building's Earth-conscious design.
• Kitchen CraftHandmade ceramic tile, the copper hood, natural light, forest views, and old-world prisms are part of a kitchen meant to be used, learned in, cooked in, and gathered around.
• Timber FrameThe clerestory timber frame by David Yasenchack Timber Framing + Design incorporates white oak, black cherry, walnut, black locust, reclaimed Douglas fir, and live-edge tie beams.
• Masonry + StrawbaleThe masonry heater was created by Ken Matez of Fountainhead Natural Homes. The strawbale wall system was designed by Mark Hoberecht of HarvestBuild and completed on site with Chris Fox of Fox's Natural Building.
• Art in the ArchitectureCustom stained glass by GroovySquid Glass and hand-painted cob artwork by Dano Paints make art part of the architecture rather than an afterthought.
• Light in the WallsNatural mica powder was worked into the cob so the walls themselves catch and reflect light, turning an Earth-built surface into another quiet piece of the building's visual magic.

Built by Artisans for Artisans

Knob N' Wood was never meant to feel factory-finished. The building carries the hands, ideas, color, craft, and problem-solving of the artists and natural builders who helped make it possible. Art lives in the structure itself, from the stained glass and painted cob to the timber joinery, ceramic tile, copperwork, and the small details tucked into rooms, walls, and windows.

• GroovySquid GlassCustom stained-glass windows turn sunlight into color throughout Knob N' Wood, making the changing light part of the architecture.
• Dano PaintsHand-painted cob artwork brings creatures, plants, celestial imagery, and hand-made story into the walls, including a Monarch, a bat crossing a full moon, leaves, acorns, vines, and a sacred sunrise.
• David Yasenchack Timber Framing + DesignThe timber frame is structural craftsmanship and sculpture at once, with locally meaningful species, reclaimed Douglas fir, and live-edge tie beams carrying the forest into the room.
• Natural-Building HandsKen Matez of Fountainhead Natural Homes, Mark Hoberecht of HarvestBuild, and Chris Fox of Fox's Natural Building helped shape the masonry heater and strawbale system that give the building its warmth, texture, and Earth-built character.
• Kitchen ArtistryHandmade ceramic tile, the copper hood, seasonal imagery, old-world prisms, and walls of windows make the kitchen itself a working art space rather than a utilitarian room hidden from the gathering.
• Colored Light + Found DetailColored glass, including wine bottles used to carry light into upper spaces, along with reclaimed and locally meaningful materials, lets practical building choices become part of the visual language of the retreat center.

Labyrinth, Pond, and Forest

The retreat does not stop at the walls of Knob N' Wood.

Retreats are welcome to move outdoors in every season. That might mean swimming in Princess Leia's Pond or walking Loki's Daffodil Renewal Labyrinth.

For retreats that continue beyond the day, overnight options can include Hummingbird Haven, our farm-to-table Bed + Breakfast cabin, primitive camping, RV camping, or a combination depending on availability and the size and needs of the gathering.

Build the Experience Around Your Gathering

Some facilitators come to Wild Indigo with their retreat already planned. Others come with an idea, a theme, or a feeling they want to create and need help turning it into an actual experience. You are welcome to rent the Retreat Center and bring your own programming, or Wild Indigo can help plan and co-create the retreat with you. Choose the pieces that fit what you are dreaming up. Retreat planning and creative direction are a separate paid service from the Retreat Center rental, and the level of support can be shaped around your gathering.
